Sink Holes

Solite® Stabilizes Soft Soil

Sink hole
E 95th Street, New York City

This “sink hole” appeared suddenly during underground re-construction of the New York City subway system near the E 95th street station in Manhattan. Concern for further expansion of the hole lead the MTA to choose Solite® lightweight aggregate to stabilize the underlying soft soil and fill the hole back to grade. Solite supplied a special geofill material that provided both a free draining and predictable bulk density of less than half of borrow soil or regular stone.

Paladino Construction of Brooklyn was the general contractor for the repair.

The Mass Transit Authority (MTA) is the owner.
